Visit IBTC Portsmouth at Boathouse 4

What can I expect?

Boathouse 4 is a working boatyard with an exhibition space and a restaurant. As you wonder round the building you will be sure to find students and volunteers working on boats. We are also a training provider all our students learn their boatbuilding skills on real boats in a working environment.

We have 4 cranes in our roof and two canals running into and under our building, and on any one day there will be different and exciting things happening! We might be craning a boat out of the dock or off a low loader, steaming in timbers or copper roving a new clinker plank.

As we are free you can come back as many times as you like to check on the progress on any of the boatbuilding projects.

Free to Enter

We are a free to enter part of the dockyard, so no need for a ticket.

You will enter the boatshop through our lovely big blue metal doors. This brings you straight in to our foyer. Where you will find our riggers bench and table top rope making machine. This area is manned by our valiant band of volunteers who run a work shop floor tour each day at 2pm for anyone interested.

We are open 10 -5.00 pm winter hours and until 5.30 in the summer, every day of the year apart from Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day

Birdseye View

To your left as you enter the building in the window workshop we have an authentic new build and a restoration of a Dartmouth Gig side by side. If you then go upstairs or use the lift you can access the exhibition space above. This lets you look down into the heart of the boat shop from the mezzanine floor and get a bird’s eye view right into the boats.

Exhibition Space

The exhibition space is run by the Property Trust who also run the mast climbing experience (which is a pay for activity). This is a great space to spend some time finding out about the Property Trusts Small Naval Boat collection and trying out some of the interactive exhibits, including the accessible rowing skiff “Phoenix” which was built by the volunteers.

If you are interested in one of our courses you might want to sign up for a taster day or a short course. These are the ideal way of seeing if what we offer is right for you.

Visitor Activities

We are developing a suite of  visitor activity days which will be advertised on our events page. Any daily offerings will also be noted on the chalk board in the boat shop foyer.
