Springing into action

It was with a great deal of pleasure that, in line with government recommendations, IBTC Portsmouth reopened to existing students on Tuesday 9th March. The 9 week break was a long one for both staff and students and all were glad to be back in Boathouse 4 again. Things got even busier on Monday 22nd March when a brand new cohort of students, Boat Building Class 18, arrived to begin their training at the college. The sounds of sawing, hammering, clattering tools and cheery chatter now fill the air throughout the day.

When the college was closed in January and February the staff worked, mostly remotely, on a wide range of projects designed to improve the learning experience of the students. They delivered some theory classes over Zoom and held revision sessions for the students who undertook their exams during lockdown. Not all the work has been digital, however. Skipjack, one of the vessels currently being restored by the students, had several days’ attention from instructors Matt and Jared who replaced her stern knee and post so that she is ready for replanking during the Large Boatbuilding module.
