School Leaver

Finished school and wondering what to do next?

Are you looking to develop practical skills but not sure what to do next? Would you like to be trained to work in an industry where skilled craftspeople are in high demand? Do you enjoy learning practical skills and working hard to achieve your goals?

If your answer is yes to all these questions, our 1 year Boatbuilding Course might be right for you. Our course teaches all the necessary woodworking and boatbuilding skills required to start a career in boatbuilding, woodwork and related industries.

Meet recent student, Connie

young woman looking at boat plansConnie was 19 when she decided to go into boatbuilding, 'I was looking into making hollow wooden surfboards and lots of people I contacted said they had a background in boatbuilding or had done a boatbuilding course as the skills are so similar.'

How did you find the training?

'Training at Portsmouth was everything I hoped it would be. I went into boatbuilding because it is using materials from the raw state and expanding your mind and solving problems. I loved the experienced tutors and the passion for boats shared by everyone who comes to the Boathouse.'

What are you doing now?

'Since the course finished, I've been busy volunteering and working. I volunteered on Excelsior, a tall ship, to learn traditional rigging and am going to Costa Rica to work on the construction of Ceiba, a large sailing cargo vessel. I've also repaired Victory class ribs, had a 15 week project to re-plank a 34ft gaff rigged boat and went to Barcelona to caulk a big boat. It's wonderful to have started this journey at IBTC Portsmouth.'

Who do you think the course will suit?

'I would recommend the course to anyone who has passion, creativity, a hardworking attitude and who wants to develop their skills. You'll leave being able to design many wonderful things, and with the skills to bring them to life'
